How sell settings work
Sell based on Strategy, Take Profit, Trailing Stop-Loss, and Auto Close can all be active simultaneously. Whichever condition is met first will trigger the sell. For example:
- Take Profit: 10%
- Trailing Stop-Loss: 1%
- Auto Close: 7 days
When "Sell based on Strategy" is enabled, the bot sells when your strategy's requirements are met — even at a loss. Auto Close can still trigger a sell if none of the other conditions are met within the configured period.
Stop-Loss only sells positions that are in a loss. Signalers can also trigger sells if "Sell signals" or "Signal configuration" is enabled in the Signal config — if you see unexpected sell behaviour, check these settings.
Sell Settings
Take Profit At The profit percentage at which the bot places a sell order. When a position rises above this percentage, a sell order is placed.
Order type The order type your bot uses for selling. Market orders fill immediately but may result in lower profits or larger losses during low volume or high volatility. Limit orders are placed at a specific price and usually take longer to fill.
Max open time sell The number of minutes a sell order stays open before it is canceled. A short sell open time lets the bot retry quickly, but can also result in partially filled orders.
Sell Strategy
Sell based on strategy When enabled, the bot sells when your TA strategy signals a sell. Important: positions may be sold at a loss with this setting active.
Only sell in profit When enabled, only positions in profit are sold when your strategy or a TradingView Alert signals a sell. This overrides other sell settings.
Sell in profit percentage The minimum profit percentage required before the strategy will sell a position.
Hold assets when new target is the same When enabled, the bot will not sell a currency if your TA strategy simultaneously signals a buy for that same currency — even if Take Profit or Trailing Stop-Loss is reached.
Stop-Loss
Enable Switch the toggle to activate Stop-Loss.
Stop-Loss percentage The percentage a position must drop before Stop-Loss triggers a sell. Enter a positive number — for example, enter 2.5 to sell when the price drops 2.5%. If Stop-Loss doesn't appear to be triggering, check that the percentage is filled in and that no Config Pool is overriding your Baseconfig.
Trailing Stop-Loss
Enable Switch the toggle to activate Trailing Stop-Loss.
Trailing Stop-Loss percentage The percentage a currency must drop from its peak before the bot attempts to sell.
Arm Trailing Stop-Loss The profit percentage a position must reach before the Trailing Stop-Loss is armed. For example, set to 1%: the TSL activates at 1% profit, then sells if the price drops by the TSL percentage.
Use Trailing Stop-Loss only When enabled, disables Take Profit and uses only the Trailing Stop-Loss to sell positions.
Reset Stop-Loss after failed orders When enabled, the Trailing Stop-Loss resets after a canceled order. Orders can be canceled when they are unfilled or open longer than configured.
Only sell with profit When enabled, the bot will not place a sell order if the Trailing Stop-Loss would result in a loss.
Troubleshooting Trailing Stop-Loss When using TSL, set a high Take Profit or enable "Use Trailing Stop-Loss only". The bot always sells with whichever condition is met first.
Auto-Close
Enable When enabled, all open positions are sold after a set period of time — even at a loss. Commonly used by merchants and miners who want to automatically convert positions to a stable currency.
Close position after X time open The time that must pass before the bot starts selling all open positions.
Shorting
Shorting on Cryptohopper works like an advanced buyback. When you expect a position to fall further, the bot sells it and reserves the funds. When the price reaches its bottom, the short is closed and the position is bought back — potentially at a lower price than the original sale.
Reset position after closed short When enabled, the profit percentage resets to 0% after a short is closed and the position is bought back.
Restore position after short When enabled, the original settings of the position (such as Stop-Loss and Trailing Stop-Loss) are restored when a short is closed and the position is reopened.
Automatic shorting When enabled, the bot opens short positions automatically. Useful as a replacement for Stop-Loss.
Max open short positions The maximum number of short positions the bot can hold at once. A high number increases the time it takes the bot to check each position and reserves more funds, which may prevent new regular trades from opening.
Open short based on strategy When enabled, a short position is opened when your strategy signals a sell. This overrides the "Sell based on strategy" setting.
Close short based on strategy When enabled, a short position is closed when your strategy signals a buy.
Always short instead of sell When enabled, a short position is opened whenever an existing position is sold — whether by Take Profit, Auto Close, Stop-Loss, or Trailing Stop-Loss.
Shorting percentage profit The percentage of "saved loss" at which a short position is closed. Note: this is not actual profit — it represents how much you've saved compared to holding the currency. For example, if the price drops 10% after shorting, the short shows 10% profit.
Use actual profit When enabled, profit is calculated relative to the original buy price rather than the amount saved by shorting.
Trailing Stop-Short When enabled, uses a trailing mechanism to close short positions.
Trailing Stop-Short percentage The percentage rise from the trailing low that triggers the short to close and a new position to open.
Arm Trailing Stop-Short at The percentage the price must drop before the Trailing Stop-Short begins trailing. For example: arm at 3%, trailing at 1.5% — if the price drops more than 3%, the bot starts trailing; if it then rises 1.5%, the short is closed.
Use Trailing Stop-Short only When enabled, only the Trailing Stop-Short is used to close short positions. Take Profit is disabled.
Auto close shorts within time When enabled, short positions are automatically closed after the configured time.
Close shorts after X time open The time after which a short position is closed. Overrides the "Sell based on strategy" setting.
Auto remove shorts within time When enabled, short positions are automatically removed after the configured time.
Remove shorts after X time open The time after which a short position is removed.
Do not buy back on loss When enabled, short positions that have not made a profit are removed rather than repurchased when the close signal comes in.
Ignore max open positions When enabled, the bot ignores the max open positions limit when closing and buying back a short position. This does not allow opening additional short positions through automatic shorting — it only affects the closing of existing shorts.
We recommend testing shorting in a Paper Trading bot first to understand how the different settings interact before using real funds.
Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA)
DCA helps reduce the impact of a loss-making position by buying more of the same currency at a lower price, merging positions to bring down your average buy price. It can also be used as a long-term accumulation strategy — for example, investing a fixed amount every 30 days rather than all at once.
Note: DCA increases your exposure to the currency. If the price continues to fall, losses can increase. DCA and Shorting cannot be used together.
Order type The order type used for DCA buys. Market orders fill immediately; limit orders are placed at a specific price and take longer to fill.
DCA after X time open The time that must pass after a position is opened before a DCA order is created. Useful for gradually accumulating a currency over a longer period.
DCA max retries The maximum number of DCA orders the bot can create for a single currency. Resets after every successful sell. Avoid setting this too high — it can result in significantly larger losses.
DCA set percentage The percentage the price must fall from the current position's average before a new DCA order is placed. Enter a positive number. After a DCA order is executed and positions are merged, the price must drop by this percentage again before another DCA triggers.
DCA buy immediately When enabled, the DCA order triggers as soon as the percentage loss is hit, without waiting for a strategy signal. Note: the bot may buy at an unfavourable time.
DCA order size How large each DCA order is relative to your current position:
- Double down — opens a DCA order equal to the total size of all open positions for that currency.
- Triple down — opens a DCA order twice the size of all open positions for that currency.
- Custom percentage — set your own percentage.
Troubleshooting DCA
- Do you have enough allocated funds to double or triple down?
- Is the bot enabled? Is buying enabled?
- Has the configured time passed? Is the currency hitting the configured loss percentage?
- Is there a Config Pool active that overrides your DCA settings?
- Are there Triggers that disable buying?
- If DCA is not buying immediately, has your strategy generated a signal for that currency?
